Nowadays merely from the results of a simple blood sample and the relating hormone tests the suspicion of numerous endocrinologic diseases could be confirmed or excluded.

Consultations of children’s endocrinology and diabetology are typically visited by the patients who suffer from diabetes, developmental anomaly of the thyroid gland or issues related to hormonal problems at puberty.

Endocrine system for the balance of the organism

Hormones which assist the child to be adolescent or later to be adult normally function in a well synchronized way, affect growing and development. Hormones are produced by endocrine glands (endocrine system). If there is a strong suspicion that a dysfunction occurred in the finely tuned hormonal system, that is there is an imbalance in the function of endocrine organs (thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal gland, hypophysis, hypothalamus, ovary and testicles), an endocrinologist’s help is needed.

Typical symptoms

Among the endocrinologic diseases the incidence of children’s developmental anomaly of the thyroid gland is the most frequent reason of visiting our clinic. This disease may present itself in several forms. It could be a serious cervical bulge, wet skin, hardness of stools, dysfunction of teenage girls’ menstrual cycle, brittle hair and hair loss. The anomaly of the thyroid gland’s function could be hereditary, and in this case the symptoms of the hypothyroidism may be recognized early, mostly even at puberty. In that case the specialist, on the basis of the family’s medical history, can make the diagnosis by determining the TSH value (Thyreoidea Stimulating Hormone coming from the hypophysis and controlling the function of the thyroid gland). If its value is high, further exminations are necessary. This has a serious importance for girls since successfulness of having a child in the future might be based on the reintegrated balance of the complex and sensitive endocrine system of the organism.

Developmental anomalies

Absence or retardation of children’s growth are also symptoms which may demand the expertise of an endocrinologist. In this situation it helps a lot if parents bring the child’s growth data (certificate of vaccination) to the consultation. After a careful questioning and in a thorough knowledge of the child’s and family members’ data (height, weight etc.) the specialist would be able to decide whether further examination is required or not.

Diabetes in childhood

It is very important to diagnose diabetes in due time.  It is more common in childhood that cells of the organism cannot take and utilize the sugar owing to the lack of insulin, produced and released by the pancreas (type 1 diabetes). Consequently much sugar remains in the bloodstream and after excretion by the kidneys it appears in the urine. Since sugar takes water out of the organism the quantity of the urine increases. Namely the child frequently drinks much, in parallel urinates a lot and all of a sudden loses weight and gets fatigued. It is a remarkable sign for attention that the already toilet trained child takes a leak at night and that is a frequent reason why parents bring their child for consultation where after a laboratory test the presence of sugar in his urine draws the attention to the main point of the problem, the suspicion of a type 1 diabetes in an early phase. In such cases immediate further examinations are required.

Our clinic pays special attention to overweight children who have deviation in blood, fat and sugar balance (metabolic syndrome) since these complications may indicate at early stage the hazard of young adulthood evolution of so-called type 2 diabetes. Diet, way of life counselling or possibly a medicinal treatment could be the elements of the solution for the problem. Since the diabetes and the metabolic syndrome may have hereditary origin and consequently may affect other family members, our specialists give the whole family useful dietary advice and alimentation tips not only for the sake of treatment but for the prevention as well.

Symptoms of diabetes might be:

  • increased rate of excreted sugar in the urine diagnosed by urinanalysis
  • continuous and frequent excretion of large quantities of urine and the consequent extended fluid intake with high frequency
  • weight loss despite good appetite
  • long lasting and frequently returning fungal or bacterial skin infections (diaper rash as well), slowly healing wounds

lasting nausea, abdominal pain or vomiting, constant acetone breath (not only in the morning or in case of ailments with extended fluid loss)

Puberty age problems

Puberty and the consequent hormonal changes cause problems for many children especially for girls. Disorders of the menstrual cycle with increased hair growing tendency on the body, greasy and pimpled skin may the gynecologic and endocrinologic hormone determination checkups reasonable. By the accomplishment of an objective endocrinologic examination numerous misbeliefs might be resolved. Adolescent boys’ breast enlargement going with pain is also a frequent complaint.

At our clinic patients, coming with the suspicion of having endocrinologic diseases are examined and treated by experienced endocrinologists with appropriate laboratories and checkup facilities in the background.
